Flats sorting & sequencing

Efficient and ergonomic flats sorting and sequencing.

Flexible high-throughput mail sorting with OMS

Our Open Mail Handling System (OMS) efficiently sorts and sequences mail, flats, and residual mail in one flexible process.

The system ensures items are processed gently, without mechanical stress throughout the whole mail sorting process, from the first entry to sortation up to sequencing. Additionally, the system sorts the sequenced mail directly into the final tray ready for delivery.

Benefits

Wide processing spectrum

Process items from small postcards 0.5 mm wide, to magazines, catalogs, and small parcels up to 32 mm thick and 2 kg in weight.

High operational efficiency

Achieve throughput of up to 50,000 items per hour.

Advanced sorting accuracy

With our image-based identification, Art Read and our Fingerprint technology, ARTid labeling and barcode printing are not needed anymore, and the surface of the item stays untouched.

Integrated tray management

Mail is sorted directly into trays, with automatic full tray removal—delivering perfect stacks and excellent ergonomics for operators.

Futureproof your operation

Adapting to changing mail volumes

Postal service providers face the challenge of declining letter volumes and the need to process increasingly diverse formats.

Körber’s OMS addresses this by handling various mail types—including standard mail, flats, magazines, and residual mail and small parcels—on a single platform.

This flexibility extends the life of sorting operations and adapts to the growing volume of small parcels without requiring separate equipment.

Capabilities

Diverse handling

The OMS system architecture ensures that all items are processed without mechanical stress.

Starting with multi-stage singulation at the feeders and continuing with smooth, guided injection into pocket carousels, items are transferred at low velocities into stationary transfer pockets, and finally into trays.

This careful handling minimizes damage, even for items with irregular shapes or soft packaging.

OMS can handle a broad spectrum from postcards to packages up to 32 mm thick and 2 kg, as well as open and plastic-wrapped magazines, which means that a large proportion of mail that was previously processed manually can now be sorted automatically.

Automation

Full trays with perfect stacks

Full trays are essential for minimizing handling and logistics costs.

The OMS features a tray-filling level-measurement system on the tray carousel, which is combined with intelligent algorithms to ensure trays are filled optimally with high-quality stacks.

The open mail handling system supports automatic full tray removal and includes a tray commissioning and buffering area, reducing manual handling requirements.

Identification

Innovative Fingerprint technology

Fingerprint technology, however, identifies mail pieces based on an image.

By using this technology, investments in devices like labelers, barcode printers, ink and barcode readers are unnecessary, which means money can be saved.
