What role do instruments play in the tobacco industry today?  

Christine Camilleri: Instruments have become an important factor in all industrial production facilities. Measuring instruments have permeated all levels of production or laboratories - from the control of raw materials to the finished product. The tobacco industry is a particularly sensitive and strictly regulated sector. Quality control through measuring devices used throughout production makes it possible to ensure that your products comply with the specified requirements and increase your profits by avoiding losses due to the withdrawal of non-compliant products. The stored measurement data can be used to prove the conformity of a product throughout the entire production process. It serves as insurance when marketing the product. Behind this data lies the central importance of our expertise: with all our equipment, we ensure reliable and reproducible measurements all over the world. 

What has changed for the companies' customers as a result of the merger of the traditional brands Borgwaldt and Sodim?  

Christine Camilleri: Combining the sales teams from the two subsidiaries in the Instrumentation Area of the Körber Business Area Technologies will enable us to offer you a widely varied catalogue of products and follow-ups through a single point of contact. The same applies to services, which will provide support for the entire product range in the future. This is by no means simply a merger of two companies – the aim is to incorporate the solutions from both companies into the global Körber ecosystem. This integration allows us to contribute to innovation and achieve a presence on the emerging market. Moreover, integration into the ecosystem broadens our field of vision. For example, the sustainability factor has become more important in our daily work and in our development projects.

How will the trends in the tobacco industry affect the use of instruments in the future?  

Christine Camilleri: The traditional cigarette is more and more complemented by new products such as THP, e-cigarettes, vape products, modern oral or even hemp and cannabis. Faced with this ever-changing market, As a manufacturer you must be capable of responding to needs and of developing new products in record time. In doing so, you need to integrate new solutions such as virtual or augmented reality in product maintenance work, thus reducing the necessary times and costs and the carbon footprint associated with travelling. The data gathered by instruments can be analysed in real time and make production more efficient and more reliable. We’re no longer talking about tomorrow’s world. We’re talking about the world we’re creating today.
