Shah Wahab: From Structure to Future

Article80 years of Körber

From contract manufacturer to active value driver: Shah’s story shows how the transition to Körber redefined his understanding of responsibility, trust, and leadership – and how the site in Malaysia grew along with it.

80 years of Körber

When I look back, one decision stands out more than any other.
Not because it changed a name.
But because it changed the way we think.

In late 2022, Hauni became Körber.
At the time, it looked like a rebranding.
Red became blue. Logos changed. Posters went up.

But very quickly, it became clear:
This was not about one name.
This was about mindset.

I joined the company in 2018. Back then, we were a pure contract manufacturer. We received instructions. We executed them. Responsibility had limits.

After the rebranding, those limits started to disappear.

“Once boundaries disappear, possibilities take over.”

I was still an electrical engineer at the time, working in the technical clarification team.
Malaysia was small then — fewer than 200 people.

Shortly after the name change, I was asked to do something new:
a feasibility study on the new function “Maintenance, Conversion and Rebuild”.
A function that had previously existed only in Germany, not in Malaysia.

The organization empowered us.

I remember meetings with colleagues from the management, where they encouraged us to step up:
“You are closer to the product.”
“What is the best decision for it?”

That was the moment I realized:
This is a real shift.

We started to talk about the future — not structures.

About collaboration instead of boundaries.

Before, communication happened mainly by email.
Now we talk. Constantly.
Germany, Malaysia, Hungary, the US – one call away.

When a customer issue comes up, the question is no longer where you are.
The question is: Who is best positioned to help?
That mindset changed everything.

“Start with the future you want to create — not the structure you want to build.”

Shah Wahab

Today, I hold responsibility across six functions:
It’s a lot – but it’s possible, because I have been empowered.

People ask for our opinion.
They trust our judgment.

And that trust creates responsibility – real responsibility.

For me, the Körber mindset can be summed up in one sentence:

“Start with the future you want to create – not the structure you want to build.”

Structures can be changed.
Mindsets unlock potential.

If I had to give advice to someone facing a similar moment tomorrow, it would be this:

Trust your people.
Challenge established logic.
And lead with a clear vision – even if the path isn’t fully defined yet.

Because once you remove boundaries,
you stop thinking in locations –
and start thinking in possibilities.
