The importance of diameter, weight, pressure drop and ends stability for precise quality control in the cigarette and tobacco industry.

The cigarette and tobacco industry is highly competitive and regulated and requires strict quality control and assurance of its products. To achieve this, the industry needs to measure and monitor various physical parameters of the cigarettes, tobacco, paper, filter, and packaging materials, such as diameter, weight, pressure drop and loose ends stability.

These parameters are essential for the appearance, performance, and consumer satisfaction of cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Meet the essentials

Diameter: The diameter of the tobacco and filter rod determines the shape, size, and weight of the cigarette and does have an influence on the draw resistance and smoke delivery.

A uniform and precise diameter ensures that the cigarette meets the specifications and standards required by the market and the authorities. A deviation in the diameter can cause problems such as poor appearance, uneven burning, tar and nicotine variation, problems in the packaging process and potential customer complaints.

Weight: The weight of the tobacco and filter rod affects the filling, packing, and sealing of the cigarette, as well as the cost and yield of the production.

A consistent and accurate weight ensures that the cigarette has the optimal density, moisture, and filling power.

A variation in the weight can cause problems such as over- or underfilling, loose ends, broken cigarettes and waste of materials.

Pressure Drop: The pressure drop of the cigarette is the difference in air pressure between the mouth end and the lit end of the cigarette when the smoker draws on it.

The pressure drop influences the ease of smoking, the smoke volume, and the taste delivery. A suitable and stable pressure drop ensures that the cigarette provides the desired smoking experience and satisfaction.

variation in the pressure drop can cause problems mainly in the satisfaction of the consumer during the consumption such as harshness, bitterness, low smoke yield, and unusual taste intensity but also on variations in nicotine deliveries.

Ends stability: The ends stability of the cigarette is the ability of the tobacco rod to withstand the mechanical stress and strain during the production, transportation, and handling of the cigarette.

The ends stability affects the integrity, durability, and safety of the cigarette. A high and uniform ends stability ensures that the cigarette does not break, crack, or fall apart.

A low or variable ends stability can cause problems such as damage, tobacco loss and fire hazards due to fire cone fall outs.

Ensure precision in your cigarette production processes

Accordingly, the measurement and steady control of those parameters is a critical element in the high-speed production environment of the tobacco and cigarette industry, dealing with complex shapes, various products and variable materials.

To do so, standards of the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and recommended methods of CORESTA (Cooperation Centre for Scientific Research Relative to Tobacco) are in place to define the conditions under which these parameters are measured.

These standards provide the properties, systems, factors, and methods of measurement and give recommendations for the instrument selection, installation, operation, and verification.

By following these, the cigarette and tobacco industry can ensure the quality and consistency of their products and meet the expectations and demands of their customers and regulators' requirements.
